Anionic
- an ion or a group of ions having a
negative charge that characteristically moves
toward positively charged ions.
Aqueous
- An aqueous solution is a solution
in which the solvent is water. It is usually shown
in chemical equations as a subscript (aq).
Cationic
- An ion or group of ions having a positive charge
that characteristically move toward the negatively
charged ions.

Flocculation
- A polymer carries either a positive or
negative charge and thereby attracts a large number
of sediment particles with the opposite charge
thereby creating larger
and heavier particles causing the heavier particle to
settle out at a faster rate.
This is a
process where a solute comes out of
solution in the form of floc or "flakes". The term
is also used to refer to the process by which fine
particulates are caused to clump together into floc.
Depending on it's weight, the floc may then float to
the top of the liquid, or settle to the bottom of
the liquid.

Polymers -
A substance containing many molecules that have been
purposely joined together to perform a specific
function. These molecules form a chain-like
structure and can be either a crystal or linear in
composition.
Polyacrylamide -
"Polyacrylamide" and "PAM" are generic terms. PAMs
are polymers made up of many repeating subunits
(monomers). As with all polymers, the properties of
PAMs are very dependant on the size and weight of
the polymer. PAMs also vary in molecular size, depending
on the number of acrylamide monomers (AMD) that are
combined to form the polyacrylamide chain.
TMDL - A TMDL or Total Maximum Daily Load
is a calculation of the maximum amount of a
pollutant that a water body can receive and still
meet water quality standards, and an allocation of
that amount to the pollutants sources.
A TMDL is the sum of the allowable
loads of a single pollutant from all contributing
point and non-point sources. The calculation must
include a margin of safety to ensure that the water
body can be used for the purposes the State has
designated. The calculation must also account for
seasonable variation in water quality.
